This exceptional Libyan Desert Glass is from my personal collection. It is a an amazing quality piece with exceptionally rich color, nice dimples, and with great transparency plus some cristobalite inclusions. Libyan Desert Glass is found in only one remote location on Earth (in the Sahara Desert between Libyan and Egypt). 29 million years ago one of two events occurred that created this glass - a massive burst of thermal energy associated with a meteorite impact, or a meteorite airburst explosion above the surface of the earth in this area. This tremendous impact was sufficient to melt and fuse the surface desert sand forming the glass. Libyan Desert glass possesses the highest silica content of any natural glass known, which required temperatures above 1600°C to melt. Feel free to contact me with any questions, comments, or concerns you may have in regards to this item.
